These socks were inspired by the Rose Garden wool/bamboo sock yarn from The Fiber
Lady, which I got at Kid 'N Ewe this year.  The lace pattern is a modified version of
the Vine Stripe Pattern by Hildegard M. Elsner from page 272 of Barbara G. Walker’s
A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns, which reminds me of a Tree the way it is knit.
Cherry Tree Socks Pattern

On US 1-2 (2.5mm) double pointed needles, 8 stitches and 12 rows=1inch

Cast on 60 stitches.  Divide stitches evenly over 4 needles.  Join in ring, being careful not to
twist stitches.

Work Knit 3 Purl 3 ribbing for 12 rounds or until cuff is desired length.

Stitch pattern is worked over 15 stitches and 12 Rounds.

Round 1 and all odd rounds:  Knit around.
Round 2:  Knit 4, Yarn Over, Knit 1, Yarn Over, Knit 1, SSK, Knit 3, Knit 2 Tog, Knit 2,         
                Repeat Around.
Round 4:  Knit 4, Yarn Over, Knit 3, Yarn Over, Knit 1, SSK, Knit 1, Knit 2 Tog, Knit 2,         
                Repeat Around.
Round 6:  Knit 4, Yarn Over, Knit 5, Yarn Over,
Knit 1, Slip 1, Knit 2 Tog, PSSO, Knit 2,        
                
Repeat Around.
Round 8:  Knit 2, SSK, Knit 3, Knit 2 Tog, Knit 1, Yarn Over, Knit 1, Yarn Over, Knit 4,         
                Repeat Around.
Round 10:  Knit 2, SSK, Knit 1, Knit 2 Tog, Knit 1, Yarn Over, Knit 3, Yarn Over, Knit 4,       
                  Repeat Around.
Round 12:  Knit 2, Knit 3 Tog, Knit 1, Yarn Over, Knit 5, Yarn Over, Knit 4, Repeat Around.

Repeat Rounds 1-12 four times (for a total of five pattern repeats) or until cuff is desired length.

Work heel flap over first 30 stitches (Eye of Partridge Stitch)
Row 1:  [Slip 1, Knit 1], Repeat between brackets across, Turn.
Row 2:  Slip 1, Purl Across, Turn.
Row 3:  Slip 1, [Slip 1, Knit 1] Repeat between brackets to last stitch, Knit 1, Turn.
Row 4:  Slip 1, Purl Across, Turn.

Repeat Rows 1-4 seven more times (for a total of 32 rows) or until heel is approximately square.

Repeat Rows 1-2 once more.
Turn heel
Row 1:  Slip 1, Knit 16, SSK, Knit 1, Turn.
Row 2:  Slip 1, Purl 5, Purl 2 Tog, Purl 1, Turn.
Row 3:  Slip 1, Knit 6, SSK, Knit 1, Turn.
Row 4:  Slip 1, Purl 7, Purl 2 Tog, Purl 1, Turn.

Gussets
Slip 1, Knit across (18 stitches on needle)
With a new needle Pick up 18 stitches across Heel Flap and one stitch in corner (19 stitches on
needle)
Work first row of pattern (knit row) on next two needles (15 stitches on each needle)
With a new needle Pick up 1 stitch in corner and 18 stitches along heel flap (19 stitches), knit
first 9 stitches from the next needle onto this needle (28 stitches on needle)
Slip the remaining 9 stitches to the next needle.  Knit across the 28 stitches on this needle.
The first two needles should now be the top of the foot and the second two needles should be
the bottom of the foot.

You should now have 15 stitches on Needle 1, 15 Stitches on Needle 2, 28 stitches on Needle 3
and 28 stitches on Needle 4.

Decrease for Instep

Decrease Round
Needle 1:        Work in lace pattern (this should be an even round of your pattern)
Needle 2:        Work in lace pattern (this should be an even round of your pattern)
Needle 3:        Knit 1, SSK, Knit across
Needle 4:        Knit to last three stitches, Knit 2tog, Knit 1

Plain Round
Needle 1:        Work in lace pattern (this should be an odd (knit) round of your pattern)
Needle 2:        Work in lace pattern (this should be an odd (knit) round of your pattern)
Needle 3:        Knit 1, SSK, Knit across
Needle 4:        Knit to last three stitches, Knit 2tog, Knit 1

Work these two rounds until you have 15 Stitches on all for needles, for a total of 60 stitches.

Work even for Foot
Needle 1:        Work in lace pattern
Needle 2:        Work in lace pattern
Needle 3:        Knit across
Needle 4:        Knit to across

Repeat until sock measures 1 ½ - 2 inches from end of toe, ending on Round 12 of lace pattern

Shape Toe:

Decrease Round
Needle 1:        Knit 1, SSK, Knit Across
Needle 2:        Knit across to last 3 stitches, Knit 2tog, Knit 1
Needle 3:        Knit 1, SSK, Knit Across
Needle 4:        Knit to last 3 stitches, Knit 2tog, Knit 1

Plain Round
Knit across all 4 needles

Repeat these 2 rounds until there are a total of 20 stitches left
Slip the stitches from Needle 2 onto Needle 1 and from Needle 4 onto Needle 3 and graft the
toe closed.


Sock should fit either left or right foot.  Repeat pattern for second sock.
